Victory Day is a public holiday in Cuba, and it is observed on January 2 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Che Guevara\’s and Camilo Cienfuegos\’ troops arrived in Havana.
Cuba is a country located in the northern Caribbean Sea. Fulgencio Batista became the president in 1940 and held the post until 1944. In 1952, he staged a coup and seized power. In the 1950s, Cuba encountered economic problems with a high unemployment rate and corruption. People started to against Batista\’s government.
In 1956, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara started a guerrilla war against Batista\’s regime. After the success in the rural areas, they began to win battles in cities in 1958. In December 1958, Guevara\’s forces captured Santa Clara, the capital city of the Villa Clara province, which forced Fulgencio Batista to flee on January 1, 1959. On January 2, 1959, Che Guevara\’s and Camilo Cienfuegos\’ troops arrived in Havana.
