Reconciliation Day is a public holiday in Republic of the Congo, and it is observed on June 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the one-party rule was ended in 1991.
Republic of the Congo is a country located in the western coast of Central Africa, and it became a French colony in 1886. In 1903, the colony was renamed as Middle Congo, and became part of French Equatorial Africa (AEF) in 1908. Following the dissolution of the French Equatorial Africa (AEF) in 1958, Middle Congo became the autonomous republic as the Republic of the Congo within the French Community on November 28, 1958.
Republic of the Congo gained its full independence from France on August 15, 1960. In 1968, Marien Ngouab stepped a successful bloodless coup and took the power. He declared the first Marxist-Leninist state in Africa and created a single-party state.
Following the dissolution of Russia and Yugoslavia in early 1990s, Denis Sassou introduced multiparty politics in 1990. Reconciliation Day is a holiday to commemorate the end of the one-party rule in Republic of the Congo.
