Independence Day (Algeria)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Algeria, and it is observed on July 5 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Algeria gained independence from France in 1962.

The region of Algeria was partially ruled by the Ottomans from 1516 to 1830, and the French invaded and captured Algeria in 1830. In the first half of the 19th century, hundreds of thousands of European immigrants moved to Algeria and formed a majority of the population in some cities.

In 1945, the lack of political and economic status under the colonial system caused dissatisfaction among the Muslim population, which led to the uprisings against the occupying French forces, and the tension between the two groups got worse.

The Algerian Independence War between the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the French started in 1954, which lasted 8 years until 1962. During the War, about 1 million Algerians are estimated to have died, and more than 2 million were made into refugees or relocated into the camps.

On July 3, 1962, the French pronounced the independence of Algeria, however, Algerian leaders declared July 5, the anniversary of the French arrival into Algeria, the day of Independence Day.
