Adwa Victory Day is a public holiday in Ethiopia, and it is observed on March 2 each year.
Adwa Victory Day celebrates the Ethiopian victory to the Kingdom of Italy in the Battle of Adwa, which was the climactic battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War. The battle was fought on March 1, 1896 near the town of Adwa between Ethiopia and the Kingdom of Italy.
The battle was the last and the most decisive battle against the invading colonial forces of Italy. The Ethiopian victory prevented the Kingdom of Italy to expand its colonial empire in Ethiopia and remained independence of Ethiopia until the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, which was fought between 1935 and 1937, 40 years after.
