Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Republic of San Marino, and it is observed on February 5 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when San Marino gained its independence from Cardinal Giulio Alberoni in 1740.
San Marino is a European microstate and a landlocked country surrounded by Italy, and it is the smallest republic in the world with a population of about 33,000. San Marino was established in 301AD, and the border of the country has remained the same since 1463.
In 1739, Cardinal Giulio Alberoni, the legate of Ravenna, occupied the country. The people of San Marino protested the occupation, and on February 5, 1740, Pope Clement XII restored independence to San Marino.
February 5 is also the feast day of Saint Agatha, the patron saint of San Marino.
