National Day is a public holiday in the Principality of Liechtenstein, and it is observed on August 15 each year. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Prince Franz-Josef II.
Liechtenstein is a microstate located in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland, and it is one of the smallest countries in the world with a population of about 39,000. Liechtenstein has been celebrating National Day on August 15 since 1940.
August 15 was chosen because of the following two reasons: First, the Assumption of Mary is celebrated on August 15 and it has been a holiday in Liechtenstein. Secondly, Prince Franz Josef II was the ruling prince at the time, and he was born on August 16, 1906.
Although Prince Franz Josef II died on November 13, 1989, Liechtenstein decided to keep the same day as the National Day.
