National Heritage Day is a public holiday celebrated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and it is observed on the second Monday in October each year. The holiday was Columbus Day which commemorates the anniversary when Christopher Columbus first sighted the islands on his first voyage in 1492.
Columbus Day was renamed National Heritage Day in 2014 celebrating the rich historical and cultural heritage of the islands.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory, which consists of the larger Caicos Islands, the smaller Turks Islands, and many cays and islets. Indigenous people inhabited the island for hundreds of years before Europeans came to the islands. Europeans started to settle on the islands in the middle of the 17th century, and it became a British colony in 1783.
