Independence Day is a public holiday in Sudan, and it is observed on January 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Sudan gained its independence from Egypt and the United Kingdom in 1956.
Sudan, officially the Republic of Sudan, is a country in Northeast Africa. Sudan\’s history tracks back to Ancient Egypt, about 5000 years ago. Over the years, Sudan was under different rules. Egypt conquered Sudan in the 19th century, however, the United Kingdom occupied Egypt in 1881. Under the pressure from the United Kingdom, Egypt agreed to share the sovereignty over Sudan with the United Kingdom.
In the 20th century, following the growth of nationalism on ending the United Kingdom\’s occupation, the United Kingdom agreed to grant independence to Sudan. As a result, Sudan declared its independence on January 1, 1956.
