Armed Forces Day is a public holiday in Mozambique, and it is observed on September 25 each year. The holiday marks the start of the Mozambican War of Independence, the first armed fight for independence from the Portuguese colonial rule.
Mozambique became Portugal\’s colony in the early 16th century. After World War II, many European nations were granting independence to their colonies, and the independence movement in Mozambique developed rapidly. On June 25, 1962, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) was formed by three regional nationalist organizations.
The Mozambican War of Independence started on September 25, 1964, when attempts at peaceful negotiation by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) were abandoned. The War lasted almost 10 years until September 8, 1974, when the Lusaka Accord agreement was signed, which led to the independence on June 25, 1975.
