Prince Louis Rwagasore Day is a public holiday in Burundi, and it is observed on October 13 each year. The holiday commemorates the death anniversary of Prince Louis Rwagasore, who was assassinated in 1961.
Prince Louis Rwagasore was born on January 10, 1932, the son of King Mwambutsa IV. He was active in the nationalist movements fighting for the independence of the nation from the Belgian colonial rule.
He briefly attended university in Belgium and became a leading figure of anti-colonial activists. In 1958, he established the Union for National Progress (UPRONA), which won the election on September 8, 1961, and Rwagasore became the prime minister. However, he was assassinated weeks after on October 13, 1961.
