Independence of Cuenca is a public holiday in Ecuador, and it is observed on November 3 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the city of Cuenca gained independence in 1820.
The Spanish took over what is now Ecuador from the Inca in 1533. After almost 300 years of Spanish rule, the people in Quito (the capital of Ecuador) called for independence from Spain on August 10, 1809. Although the independence only lasted a short time, it became an inspiration for the independence movement for the rest of Spanish America.
The Spanish settlement of Cuenca was founded on April 12, 1557, and it was developing fast under Spanish rule. On November 3, 1820, Cuenca gained its independence from the Spanish Empire following the independence of Guayaquil on October 9, 1820.
On May 24, 1822, the Battle of Pichincha took place on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, near the city of Quito. As a result of the battle, the city of Quito and many other provinces declared independence from Spain.
