Dormition of the Mother of God, also known as Feast of the Dormition, is an important religious festival celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. In Georgia, it is celebrated on August 28 each year (or August 15 in many other countries).
Dormition of the Mother of God commemorates the falling asleep or the death of Mary, the mother of Jesus. There are different ideas on the death and assumption of Mary. Many Christians believe that Mary first died, but she was miraculously resurrected before being assumed. However, others believe she was assumed bodily into Heaven without first dying.
People celebrate the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Georgia, while Christians in many other places celebrate the Assumption Day, the day that the bodily taking up of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven.
