Guanacaste Day, also known as Annexation of Nicoya, is a public holiday in Costa Rica, and it is observed on July 25 each year.
Guanacaste Day commemorates the annexation of the Guanacaste province in 1824. Most of the current Guanacaste was the territory of Nicoya, which consists of 3 cities: Nicoya, Santa Cruz, and Liberia.
In 1824, a referendum was held in Nicoya to decide the annexation to Costa Rica, and the annexation won with Nicoya and Santa Cruz voting yes and Liberia voting no. On July 25 in the same year, the Guanacaste province formally become part of the Costa Rican territory.
