Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday in most provinces and territories in Canada, and it is observed on the second Monday in October.
Thanksgiving Day is a holiday to celebrate the successful harvest and all the blessings from the last year. People get together with families and friends enjoying the traditional food typically including the roasted turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. For many families, the turkey leftovers may last several days to use up.
In early years, when people from Europeans landed on the new land, they prayed the blessings such as the safe journey, the abundant harvests, and even the military victories. The pray day gradually became the Thanksgiving Day. Nowadays, although many churches still provide speical services, Thanksgiving Day gradually moved away from its religious roots and become a holiday for all people with various backgrounds.
During the holiday, schools, government departments and many business are closed, and many people have the day off spending time with families.
